About
Children living with chronic health conditions may be at higher risk of developing heart and blood vessel problems earlier in life. Although experts recommend close monitoring, we still don't fully understand how to best predict or prevent these issues over the long term.
Recent studies suggest that tiny blood vessels (the microvasculature) can already begin to show damage many years before heart disease becomes noticeable. This early damage may be linked to ongoing inflammation, changes in metabolism, or the effects of certain treatments. However, we don't yet know how these factors affect children's blood vessels as they grow.
Our study aims to better understand what causes this increased heart risk in children with chronic conditions. We also plan to develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can help detect early signs of cardiovascular risk and support more personalized, proactive care.

Inclusion criteria
Chronic childhood conditions/diseases associated with increased risk of early cardiovascular disease are defined according to the 2019 American Heart Association recommendations (https://doi.org/10.1161/CIR.0000000000000618), as well as other conditions/diseases for which at least two large-scale epidemiological studies have demonstrated an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
